Maltitol is a type of sweetener belonging to the polyol family, which are sugar alcohols. It is used as a sugar substitute in many food products to reduce calorie content, as it contains about 2.1 calories per gram compared to around 4 calories per gram of regular sugar. However, its sweetening power is about 75-90% that of sucrose (table sugar).

Maltitol appears as a white, soluble powder and is an excellent alternative for making desserts, cookies, creams, and pastries in general.

However, be aware that in high doses, maltitol can have a laxative effect, similar to other polyols, and may cause bloating or intestinal cramps.

An interesting note is that, unlike sucrose, maltitol does not contribute to tooth decay, so it is often used in "sugar-free" chewing gums and candies.
